Drop in Oil Prices Bumps Up Airline Stock

These days I tend to assume that everyone follows the price of oil. In case you don't, you should know that a barrel of oil has dropped to about $126 (as of Tuesday). Less than a couple of weeks ago a barrel was pushing $150.

United Second Quarter Report

United Airlines joins the list of airlines reporting losses in the second quarter. Reuters reports that the airline "posted a steep quarterly loss on soaring fuel prices and said it would eliminate nearly 13 percent of its work force as part of a major downsizing, sending shares of the United Airlines parent soaring more than 16 percent."

United provides Springfield-Branson service to Denver and Orlando.

Allegiant Reports Second Quarter Results

Allegiant Air released its second quarter results late this afternoon. The airline provides our service to Las Vegas, Orlando and Tampa/St. Petersburg.

Maurice Gallagher, Allegiant chair and CEO says, “We had very good results during our second quarter. In spite of exceptional headwinds from fuel, we are yet again one of the few companies in our space who were profitable. We grew revenues approximately 48% to $132 million on a 36.5% increase in departures. We continued our successful focus on achieving a higher scheduled load factor with 90.5% in the second quarter, a 5.5 percentage point increase over the second quarter of 2007. We believe this was the highest domestic load factor in the industry."

"Load factor" is industry jargon for how many seats are sold on the plane. A 90.5 percent load factor means 90.5 percent of the seats are sold.

It's refreshing to have good airline news to report...
